When I began seeing my nutritionist, she recommended adding Sunflower Seed Butter to my smoothies in the morning. I was a little dubious, but decided to try it. Surprisingly, it tasted delicious, creamy, and nutty as well as added some much needed protein to my morning.
Once Again Organic Sunflower Seed Butter was my choice. This company is employee owned, founded in 1976 and it’s made in the U.S.A. I contacted Once Again Nut Butter and asked where the ingredients were sourced. The sunflower seeds are sourced from Romania. The Sunflower Oil is from The Netherlands and USA as of February 2016. I found the company to be overall responsive and communicative.
Sunflower Seed Butter is very versatile, vegan, kosher, gluten-free, organic, non-GMO certified, unsweetened and salt free, just to name some biggies.
When I eat it plain it doesn’t really do it for me, but in a smoothie, baked in my chocolate chip “paleo” cookies (recipe coming soon) and my favorite thing so far……dipping my green apple in Sunflower Seed Butter, delicious. My sister is a little jealous of this, she doesn’t eat fruit, but so far it doesn’t seem to adversely affect me!
Now, I confess, I add salt to the Sunflower Seed Butter. I like that I get to control how much is added. You can get Sunflower Seed Butter with salt and sugar as well, but I prefer to control how much is added. Also, if you over do it, maybe find so many ways to use this product that you are consuming 4 or more Tablespoons a day, it could bind you up. That being said, I have one or two Tablespoons a day and that seems just about perfect for me. Dipping a half a green apple in about a Tablespoon of Once Again Organic Sunflower Seed Butter each day around 3pm is the crunch, sweet and salty snack that satisfies that mid-afternoon slump I usual get. Sorry Kacy!
During my investigation of sunflower seeds I found they are a good source of Vitamin E and Folate, which promote cardiovascular health. Vitamin E is an extra great vitamin for me because it helps neutralize free radicals to protect brain health. It has Phytosterols that promote healthy cholesterol levels and magnesium, which is good for protecting the brain, heart and muscles. Magnesium Sulfate is good for mental health and selenium is an antioxidant that helps reduce redness and swelling. These are all great things to add to your diet, especially if you are dealing with an autoimmune disease.
I also recommend making your own Sunflower Seed Butter if you have a Vitamix or high-powered blender. No need to add any liquid, just add 3 or 4 cups of the sunflower seeds. You need to use the tamper to push the seeds down so it forms a beautiful creamy paste. I go through Sunflower Seed Butter quickly so I leave it in the cupboard, but if you use it infrequently I would store it in the refrigerator otherwise, due to the high oil content, it will go rancid.
I have very few convenience foods and this is one of them. I always recommend making your own first, but let’s face it that is not always practical.
Ingredients as listed on the jar: Organically grown, dry roasted sunflower seeds, Organic Sunflower Oil.
